Knitted Dishcloth Pattern

My mother in law, or OMA is a kind and warm hearted woman. She treats my boys with an enormous amount of love. She’s the kind of grandmother that would sit and play and read with you for hours.

She’s a beautiful blessing for my boys. When she’s not over to play, she spends her time getting crafty surrounded by an impressive array of antiques, family heirlooms and photos.

In the 90’s Oma cross stitched up a storm, 30 years later she’s rocking the diamond dots. But knitting these dishcloths is a hobby shes’ always had. Oma sits in her big green rocking chair and knits dishcloth after dishcloth in the the fall and winter. We can always count on having a new cloth in a bright vibrant colour.

Oma keeps her needles and yarn in this basket. A beautiful antique basket that has a story. One we won’t ever know because Oma likes to shop at the thrift store. But honestly, if the fabric could talk. Wherever it came from, it will be know as Oma’s basket, and man is it ever Oma’s.

At the back of the basket lies her knitting needle holder her own grandmother made by knitting around a cardboard tube. Brilliant. I think I might steal that DIY Hack one day.

In this post I’ll share with you this super easy knit dishcloth pattern you can easily do! Along with some tips and links to the perfect yarn for your cloths.

This knit dishcloth pattern has become my favourite knit project for building a stash of practical gifts. It’s not a big bulky project like when you are knitting a blanket, so it’s perfect for knitting on the go or in the summer heat.

I knit most of my dishcloths on camping trips overlooking lakes and oceans. Where do you spend your time knitting?

The winter is also a great time to cozy up with bigger projects or take an online knitting class to improve your skills for the following season. I recommend this online knitting school from my friend Nancy.

OMA’s KNITTED DISHCLOTH PATTERN

I can see why Oma loves this patten, knitting easy patterns is a great calming activity that can while watching tv, during a staff meeting or sitting back in a lawn chair knitting while camping.

While Oma knits dishcloths, my best friend knits these adorable toques and I knit baby blankets like they are going outta style.

This pattern is traditionally called grandmothers knitted dishcloth pattern, which is perfect because both my Grannie and Oma use this pattern like its going out of style. Which in my opinion should never, but I’m an old fashioned soul.

KNITTING SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Size 7 Knitting Needles– Size 5-7 should work, the end of your wash cloth will depend on the needles you have, how tight or loose you want the stitches and how thick or thin your yarn is.

Counter: This is optional as it can be helpful with keeping track of stitches or rows.

Cotton Yarn of choice, since this is a dishcloth/washcloth, you want 100% cotton, mercerized cotton should work as well; both single and variegated colours work for this pattern

OMA’S KNITTING TIPS

The final size of your dishcloth will depend on your tension. To use a whole ball of the Bernat Yard as seen above, increase your longest row to 50 stitches before starting to decrease.

To be thrifty and get two dishcloths from one ball increase your longest row only to 25 stitches before starting to decrease.

THE KNITTED DISHCLOTH PATTERN

K2, yo, knit to end

Repeat step 3 until you have 45 stitches across ( or however many you want, it will depend on your needles and yarn size)

K1, K2tog, yo, k2tog, knit to end

Repeat step 4 until you are down to 4 stitches

CO

To finish your dishcloth, just put the end of the yarn through your last loop, tighten it, and then hide both your ends.

Knit Dishcloth Pattern Notes:

Each time you yarn over you are creating the “hole” along the edge of the dishcloth while also increasing each row by 1 stitch.

When you knit 2 together twice as you decrease is so you can continue to do the yarn over and continue the “hole” border while also decreasing 1 stitch for each row.

This pattern is super quick and easy, fold a few up and tie with a bow for a quick gift or keep them and use them.

A beautiful fresh new dishcloth is a great motivator for doing your dishes and skipping the dishwasher. Hello lower electricity bill.
