CREATIVE HOBBIES FOR MOMS
I’ve always been a crafter, I love sewing and quilting. I love knitting and scrapbooking and all things DIY. When I became a mom it became really hard to find time for myself as a crafter.
It wasn’t until my babies were toddlers that I really started to notice how much I missed my creative outlets and once I started to prioritize finding time to get creative I started to notice a huge difference in my mental health.
As moms, it’s so easy to prioritize your children and your families needs before yourself. The trend in 2020 and the hot topic amongst us moms seems to be the buzz word, self care. Creative hobbies are a great excuse for self care because they can really make a difference in your life.
There are a number of studies that prove that creative hobbies help with depression, anxiety, and long term mental health like dementia.
Not only do creative hobbies allow for increased endorphins ( the happy hormones) they also provide a way for moms especially to feel productive, mentally sharp by learning something new and as a way to turn a hobby you love as an extra income source.
By now you’re feeling convinced. It’s time to find a creative hobby you love and can easily learn for free from the comfort of your home.

KNITTING
Knitting is that beautiful lost art of looping yarn using needles to create stunning pieces for your home and closet like dishclothes, blankets and throw pillows to sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, socks, you name it.
It’s also an amazing creative hobby to learn online and only requires a few supplies, some yarn and needles and maybe a few markers.
As a beginner knitter myself, I find the easiest ways to knit is in the round. Most of my beginner patterns are all done on circular needles.

CROCHET
Similar to knitting, Crochet allows you to do all the above with a single hook . I’ve heard it’s actually much easier than knitting but I’m going to have to give it a go before I can give you my own opinion.

HOW TO EMBROIDER FLOWERS
My great aunt and my great grandmother were beautiful embroiderers. I was lucky enough to have some of their work passed down to me. Embroidery is free hand stitching on cloth or fabric to create beautiful table clothes, tapestries, linens and more. It’s easier than it looks with bundle sets made just for beginners. I highly suggest starting to learn how to embroider letters and flowers for quick and easy personalized gifts.

LEARN HOW TO CROSS STITCH
My grandmother has gifted me all of her cross stitch supplies. Cross stitch uses embroidery thread like above but is stitched in a cross pattern on woven ada fabrics to create beautiful images and text.
It was quite popular in the 80’s and 90’s as a hobby, but with the recent interest in “rude cross stitch” and revival of some of the classic patterns, I believe it’s made it’s come back.

HOW TO QUILT AS YOU GO
When I think of quilting, this will always be the creative hobby that reminds me of my mother. She taught me how to quilt with my first sun bonnet sue appliqué pattern.
I highly suggest as a beginner quilter to quilt with Moda Fabric precuts. Find everything you need in the Moda Bake Shop, all of these free patterns and fabrics can be found at the fat quarter shop. Another easy way to learn to quilt is to quilt as you go instead of finding a specific pattern.
Start by simply stitching two squared pieces of fabric the same length together with a quarter inch seam, press to the darker fabric side and keep going.
