This yummy apple cake recipe is known as fathers cake and is super easy to make with kids, perfect for daddy’s birthday or fathers day.
This super simple Fathers Cake is an old fashioned, from scratch cake recipe that comes from my great grandmothers cookbook. As you know, I’m a huge fan of anything involving apples, oats and old fashioned vintage things. So naturally this cake would be the icing on my cake!
I make this cake with my boys on Fathers Day for my husband, it’s a great one to make because they can easily help out with the process. After a long Fathers Day fishing, this is the perfect cake to come home to!
This Fathers Cake has become part of our fathers day traditions and could easily be adopted into your family’s celebrations as it’s super easy to make!
APPLE CAKE RECIPE FROM SCRATCH
EQUIPMENT
INGREDIENTS
- Brown Sugar
- Sour Cream
- Eggs
- Baking Soda
- Flour
- Apples
- Butter
- White Sugar
METHOD FOR FATHERS CAKE
Start by mixing the wet ingredients together, eggs , sour cream, brown sugar
Then sift the dry ingredients together, the flour, oats and baking soda.
Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until moist but not over mixed.
Spray a 8″ cake pan and add the batter to the pan.
Core and slice the apples thinly. I like to use fresh apples from our trees as often as possible, but in this case I used apples I had froze last year, if you do this increase the baking time or defrost them first.
Check out how to easily core, slice and preserve your apples!
A fun alternative could be adding canned apple pie filling on top!

Once you’ve prepared the apples, arrange them on top of the batter in a fun design. This is a great time to get the kids involved.
Make the crumb topping by grating 1/2 cup of cold butter using a cheese grater ( a fun hack to cutting in the fat when baking!) and mix with the flour and white sugar.
Sprinkle the crumb topping on top of the apples and cake batter.
Bake the cake at 350 for 40 minutes.
Allow cake to cool before serving.
Goes well with Vanilla Ice Cream, but what doesn’t?!

HOW CAN I KEEP MY APPLE CAKE FRESH?
Apple cake will stay fresh if wrapped in two layers of plastic wrap and a layer of foil places in a airtight freezer bag or sealed plastic container for up to 12 months in the freezer. Just thaw and serve at room temperature.
If you’re making your cake ahead of time but not wanting to freeze it for farther down the road then you’ll need to consider storing it in the fridge.
SHOULD APPLE CAKE BE STORED IN THE FRIDGE?
This apple cake recipe is very moist because of the apples and sour cream. It can be stored in an airtight container in a cool place for 2 to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
In warm climates it is better to store the cake in the fridge. The cake can be removed from the fridge an hour before serving to let it come back to room temperature.
