Making Handmade Birthday Cards
Making and receiving cards is something I’ve always loved. I have all my birthday cards given to me in a shoebox next to my bed. There’s something about seeing wishes handwritten and names of family members now gone and old friends.
I also do my best to make cards every year for friends and family, and keep handmade cards organized in a photo box. Go ahead and do the same with this list of must haves when making greeting cards to help you get started, have fun!

WHAT MAKES A BEAUTIFUL BIRTHDAY CARD?
Matting
Mix of coordinating colours, patterns and textures
Focal Point
FAMILY PHOTO
It’s fun to send a holiday family photo with your card. Why not get a professional one taken at a tree farm, or simply set up your tripod in your backyard. There’s nothing wrong with a funny family selfie either!
ADDRESS ENVELOPES
Handwrite your return address or save time by using a personalized address stamp like this one. I always think this is a sweet wedding or shower gift for a bride to be, personalized stationary and stamps.
ADDRESS BOOKS
Honestly, Address Books seem like a thing of the past but when it comes time to mail cards, wedding invitations or other formal postage an address book is super handy.
One great idea is to have an address book at a large event for friends and family to fill in like a wedding for the bride and groom.

Recycle old cards by cutting out the sentiments and images and mounting on coordinating card stock, add some ribbon and a bow.
Recently, a family member recycled her sons birthday card to give to his daughter on her same birthday. Auntie Cathy, you are a gem! This is a fun idea you might use when making cards for your family members.
WRITING SENTIMENTS
Sayings
For the cover of the card.
Use recycled card ideas, google for themed birthday wish ideas, there are so many sayings to go with.
Stick with a classic “Happy Birthday”
Wishes
Sentiments for the inside of the card.
Include a message, a poem, a blessing, bible verse or funny thoughts
Add a Sketch
It wouldn’t be a card from my husband without a hand drawn image of a stick man catching a big fish!
Draw a favourite picture or memory. Why not?!
My good friend always hand draws her cards with an image she knows is close to our hearts or to fit the theme of the party.
Handprint/ Fingerprint
We always trace our toddlers hand inside of cards as his signature and let them colour them in.
