This Vintage Chocolate Cake recipe originates from my great grandmother during the Depression Era, when ingredients were limited. This chocolate cake is a super simple from scratch recipe also known as Boiled Chocolate Cake.

I’ll never forget my Dad sharing this stories of his favourite cake his Grannie used to make him as a little boy. Imagining my dad as a little kid, and a Grannie I never knew instantly warmed my nolsstalgic heart.

It wasn’t until I got my own copy of my grandmothers cookbook until I remembered that story. When I found the recipe, I was shocked at just how simple it was. If she could make the best cake for him, so could I !

So here we go, a simple from scratch vintage cake my father loved as a child .

VINTAGE CHOCOLATE CAKE

The goodness of this recipe is all in the boiled part of the boiled chocolate cake. The first step is to boil the milk and cocoa together before adding to the rest of the ingredients.

Ps. Don’t go and lick the spatula out of the pot after boiling the milk and cocoa, it’s bitter and not tasty at all! But don’t let that part shy you away.

When I made this cake I whipped it up and served it to my children and cut it in half to send with my mother for my dad. As soon as my husband came home it was gone. Seriously, the boys all agreed. THIS IS THE BEST CHOCOLATE CAKE EVER!

And the best part, is just how simple it is to make.
