    Homestead Business Planning

    Choose a Homesteading Niche

The first part of planning your homestead business is choosing a niche to focus on. A niche by the way, is a focal point of your business. You might choose to raise meat rabbits or run a market garden from your homestead.

It’s important to really do some research and only choose a few when you get started. Jumping in and trying to do it all is a quick path to burn out!

I’ve gathered a long list of possibilities to ponder in this post, 47 ways to make money homesteading. Then, consider what assets you already have.

Do you have a lot of land? Maybe you have little land? Or do you have experience raising animals already? Did your property come with hay equipment? Do you have hobbies that you could turn into a cash business? Start thinking outside the box.

    Find the Experts

You’ve found a niche. That’s great! Now it’s time to start building the skills necessary to carry out your business.

Look for books, ebooks, bloggers etc. that have experience in your niche that you could learn from. It’s time to do some research.

Lots of experts are referenced here.

Here are some books I highly recommend on the topic.

Don’t forget about your neighbours. I have often found that the cattle farmer down the road nearing retirement knows a wealth of information over our local farmers facebook page. These older farmers have generations of wisdom to share with us.

    Create a SMART Business Goal

Deciding to start a business is an exciting endeavour. Decide where you want to go and what the destination will look like when you get there. Making a SMART goal will help you stick with your plan and stay focused. It’s easy to get lost in all the information.

    SMART stands for

    Specific

    Measurable

    Attainable

    Realistic

    Timely

A good example of a homesteading business SMART goal would be

I will start a handmade business making crochet Christmas Ornaments for $15 each and share them with friends, family and my community at upcoming markets. It will mean spending 2 hours an evening making ornaments and advertising. I will have met my goal when I have sold 50.

    4. Choose actionable steps.

Start taking action on your goal right away. Decide on 3-5 steps that can be done in the very near future to get you going.

    Here are a few examples

    Choose a business name

Write down your smart goal and put it in a spot you’ll see it every day

Reach out to experts, purchase any ebooks or courses you might need

    Start a business binder

    5. Support Team

It’s important to have supports in place when you start something new and exciting. Celebrate your new endeavour with your close friends and family and choose 3-5 people that you can share the details of your business with. If you’re a parent you may need to ask these people to help you with babysitting. If you’re in a relationship, you might need to discuss the finances behind the business for start up.

    YOU HAVE A BUSINESS IDEA

it's time to put it in writing
