Looking to plan your own homestead from scratch in 2021? You’ve come to the perfect place. In this post you’ll learn how to build a homestead from the ground up that provides for your family in a variety of ways.

I can’t wait to share with you my favourite tools and tricks for getting started homesteading that will save you time, energy and sanity! Let’s get to it.

HOW DO YOU START FROM SCRATCH AS A BEGINNER HOMESTEADER?

Now to make sense of this post, I give you my best advice for starting your own homestead from scratch and the resources I’ve created to help you take those steps to the next level.

I want you to know that you’re amazing for wanting to homestead, in fact homesteaders like us are brave, strong and beautiful people that have much to share with the world. May these tips help you get started on this journey.

THE FIRST STEP…

I think the best way to start your homesteading journey is to take your first step. Now I don’t mean throw all your saving, blood sweat and tears at a beautiful piece of property that you’ve been dreaming about.

Although that would be nice, it’s important to start where you are, with the skill set you have and what you want to learn more about.

The biggest mistakes new homesteaders make it diving in with both feet and drowning before feeling any sort of success or accomplishment.

What do I mean by that? Don’t go and by every animal out there, cut off all the power to your house and throw seeds in the ground like you’re about to lead a fully self sufficient life starting tomorrow.

There’s lots to learn, and the time to do it.

We started our homestead five years ago when we bought our farmhouse. Although now that I look back, the moment I started preserving my nana apples on Saturday mornings with my mom instead of watching cartoons was probably the seed that planted our dream.

Learn more about our homestead journey here.

PLANNING AND GOAL SETTING

The best thing you can do is create reasonable goals that are agreed upon by your family that help you work towards your long term goal. There is a lot to learn, a lot of projects to do and without a plan it’s beyond easy for it to all fall apart.

As a brand new homesteader, how do you know where to start and what your short and long term goals should be?

I suggest thinking about just a few things you’d like to be able to make, grow or raise that would allow you to be one step closer to being self sufficient without breaking the bank.

That might mean you make your own toilet paper or better yet plant a few raspberry canes from your neighbours so you don’t have to buy your own raspberries come the summer.

The ideas are endless. That’s why our homesteading skills post has been so popular lately. If you haven’t seen it, hop on over and see the long list of ideas for building your skill set and gather ideas for what you’d like to do or skip this year and in the next five.

This post, and the mini ebook will allow you to check off what you already have done, be inspired for new projects and skills to learn cross off things you don’t want to do and instantly find previous projects to celebrate.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT IDEAS

Setting goals, deciding on projects and creating deadlines seems like something from the office but project management is in fact a very large part of homesteading.

From planning your garden, preparing for harvest season and designing your rootcellar to store it all the projects are endless.

I share our five secrets for goal setting that make managing projects easier and less stressful. Feel more successful and get those projects done so you can enjoy watching your chickens play in the sun.

HOMESTEAD BUSINESS PLANNING

Once you’ve started setting goals on your homestead such as building a chicken coop and planting a garden from scratch then it’s exciting to think about the potential of a homestead business plan.

Why not take your homesteading skills, projects, chores and tasks and multiply what you’re already doing?

Creating an annual homestead business plan by selling and offering your services during the peak of the seasons can really help solve the main problem most homesteaders face, how am I going to pay for this all? Which brings me to the next thing.

BUDGETING TIPS

How do you start a homestead from scratch when you’re broke? How do you afford to do any of the projects you want to complete?

Well, property can be expensive, heck a whole pantry of empty new mason jars is a big expense let alone the tools to do it all.

So here’s my tips, start living like a homesteader now. Start cutting major corners and start living with less.

Lower your expectations and know that your fields won’t look like a golf course, your garden may have weeds and your clothes need mending.

When spending money to build your homestead from scratch, I recommend that you think it through and you find the best deals.

Our current deals page is always being updated to help you find the best prices on homesteading supplies you might need.

Our homesteading resources page will give you sage advice from experienced homesteaders that can really help you be success in your journey for far less than a college degree.

FINDING YOUR HOMESTEAD

When you plan your homestead from scratch one thing that often gets overlooked is the creativity and the joy that’s possible when you slow down and enjoy your homesteading journal.

That’s why this year I’ve created a homesteading bullet journal and colouring book to help you do just that. It’s proven again and again that by slowing down and reflecting will help you tremendously.

Get creative, outline your garden, draw your homestead layout, cut out pictures from your seed catalogues and make a junk journal. Your homestead is your canvas.

Enjoy all the mental health benefits that come from homesteading, digging in the dirt, creating, doing, colouring, planning. Being a total animal lover, a self sustainable chicken go to gal in your community.
