Create a simple kitchen without all the unnecessary clutter, baking supplies, and gadgets on the market. Baking cookies, pies, bread, loaves and more only requires basic baking supplies. In this post I’ll share with you the essential baking supplies you need to bake from scratch and forget the rest.
The kitchen is the hub of the home. From the start of the day with a hot cup of coffee, you deserve all the tools and nothing else to get in the way of your passion for baking.
Wether you are downsizing your kitchen, moving out for the first time or just looking to simplify the clutter in your kitchen I’ve got you covered with only the essentials to get the job done!
I love to bake from scratch. I grew up on homemade cookies after school, Sunday night desserts and fresh bread in my lunch. So really it’s no surprise that I work half as hard as she did to raise my boys with homemade goodness.
I’m also a bit of a recipe hoarder, I collect family recipes like the kids collect rocks, so when it comes to baking I try to get in the kitchen more often than not.
But there’s a common roadblock most of us face when it comes to baking and it’s not the amount of supplies or recipes we hold onto its often the overwhelm that we face when we step into the kitchen.
The clutter, the excess and often the disorganized space can make it tricky.
It’s time to get back to basics and simply your kitchen, and if you’re here to start your kitchen from scratch then this is the best place to start.
I’ve tackled my tiny homestead kitchen on a very tight budget, to make preparing food for my family a breeze. From baking from scratch, cooking breakfast lunch and dinners, preserving our garden harvest and more.
This is what kitchens were created to be and do. Forget chaos, the mess and all the gadgets. Let’s get back to basics.
Go ahead and grab your essential supply list for baking, cooking and preserving food in your kitchen below.
Your Essential Baking Supplies List
It’s time to get down to the bare bones of baking and remember what tools we really need to bake our own cookies, loaves, pies, pastries, breads and more from scratch at home in our own kitchens just like our grandmothers did.
Because store bought baked goods are never better, and those fancy gadgets like the brownie cutter thing just get in the way of taste testing and great results.
Where to Buy Baking Supplies
I have adopted most of my own baking supplies over the years from family, Christmas presents and a few Epicure parties. I’ve even found some of my favourite supplies at antique stores ( yes, for a 1930’s rolling pin! ) a second hand shop, garage sales, and even the dollar store.
If you’re looking for essential kitchen supplies to gift, than I highly suggest searching Etsy for something personalized, wooden and beautiful.
Below you’ll find some of of my favourites from the Essential Baking Supply List in the Simple Kitchen Checklist. I share with you some important features to look for to create a timeless and functional supply of baking tools.
Biscuit/ Cookie Cutters
I love a classic silver round set in a variety of sizes. They are easy to use and have a variety of purposes in your kitchen from baking cookies, biscuits and more.
Muffin Tin
You really only need two sets of muffin tins, or the total amount that will fit in your oven at one time. Most recipes will make 12-24 muffins or cupcakes.
If you’re making more than that, I don’t suggest doubling as it can effect the final outcome of your baking. So use liners when you bake your muffins and allow to cool between baking.
Baking Sheet Pan
Baking sheet pans like this one here are a bit more than you’d usually spend on a cookie sheet but for a simple kitchen they are lovely to have! Bake one pan dinners, roast vegetables, bake cookies and even make pizza or a quiche with the high sides.
Large Mixing Bowl Set
I have a vintage pyrex ceramic set of mixing bowls that I absolutely love. The pop of primary colour in my kitchen is lovely. You can kind classics like this on Etsy.
If you’re looking for a more modern set, I’ve always had a plastic Kitchen Aid that I love because of it’s easy pour side. I found the same one for you here, get a set of three pistachio ones.
Tiered Cooling Racks
Stacked cooling racks let you cool dozens of cookies or 3 cakes all at once without taking up a lot of space. The large capacity of this cooling rack makes it a useful tool in your baking supplies collection.
Cake Pan
Bundt / Fluted Tube Cake Pan
Having a cake pan is essential for your simple baking supply list! Take your cakes up a notch, and use a fluted tube cake pan like this for holiday celebrations and more. I love to use this cake pan for baking pound cakes or angel food cakes when I have a large supply of eggs on hand.
Loaf Pans
Loaf Pans like the ones pictured above are a perfect addition to your simple kitchen. Loaf pans can be used for baking loaves, meatloaves, and of course loaves and loaves of bread!
I have four and use them once or twice a week to bake bread.
Liquid Measuring Cups
Measuring Cups and Spoons Set
A matching set, wether stainless steel or plastic is always nice to have and stacks together well in the same drawer or space to organize your baking supplies.
Silicon Spatula
There won’t be any batter left to lick the bowl with a silicon set of spatulas.
Ladle
Rolling Pin
Rolling pins are an absolute necessity to have when putting your simple kitchen together. I always suggest using a marble rolling pin if you like to bake a lot of pastry.
Marble helps keep the pastry chilled resulting in a flakier pie or tart crust.
Another tip I have when putting your simple kitchen together is to choose a rolling pin that will fit in your cupboard or drawer space. Mine never fit until finally I gave it to a friend and added a marble one to rolling in to my Christmas Wish List.
Immersion Blender Wand
I’m not a big fan of lots of small appliances in the kitchen, especially when the goal is to have a small simple kitchen with less clutter and more purpose. So this suggestion goes without saying, is amazing and practical.
A Cuisinart Smart Stick or other brand of immersion blender wand is a great investment to adding some power to your baking routine.
To keep the tools for your smart stick organized I suggest using a basket, and only getting the set with the attachment that work best for you and your baking plans.
